Mobile-specific attacks—from fake toll-road messages to AI-powered robocalls or virtual SIM-swaps that hijack your number—increased by 50% in 2024 over the previous year, according to cybersecurity firm Kaspersky. And with artificial intelligence on the march, phone-based fraud is growing more sophisticated by the day.
To keep up with the threats, manufacturers, carriers and software developers are rolling out new protections to keep the criminals at bay. Here is a look at some of the tools they have developed.
Giving scammers the third degree
Smartphones already have basic scam defenses, such as caller-ID labels like “Scam Likely” and options to block or silence unknown numbers. The new wave of defensive tools use AI and on-screen activity to take those safeguards to a new level.
